Attention NJ Drivers – DEER COLLISION ALERT

As you make your travel plans this month, keep in mind that turkeys aren’t the only animals on the run. According to the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety, hitting an animal is more than 3 1/2 times as common in November as compared to August.

Every November, as deer migrate and mate, their increased activity causes a sharp spike in deer-vehicle collisions.

The average property damage from a deer-vehicle collision is estimated at $3,900. Overall, NJ drivers are 3% more likely to hit a deer in the next 12 months than they were last year.

So as the risk of deer collisions rise sharply, Dickstein Associates Agency would like to share these risk management safety tips:

  • Be observant. Look out for deer-crossing signs and wooded areas and fields where deer or other animals would likely travel.
  • Distracted Driving.  Be alert. Watch for deer especially around dawn and between the hours of 6-9 p.m. when they are most active.
  • Don’t rely on deer whistles.  Wild animals really are not beholden to this technology.
  • Slow down. If you see an animal on the side of the road, slow down, and at night, when traffic permits, put on your high-beams for greater visibility.
  • Brake, don’t swerve. Swerving to avoid an animal can put you at risk for hitting another vehicle or losing control of your car. It can also confuse the animal as to which way to go. Just slow down as quickly and safely as you can.
  • Assume they have friends. Deer travel in herds, so if you see one expect there to be others.
  • Check your NJ Auto Insurance Policy. Comprehensive Physical Damage Insurance coverage insures for damages sustained to your covered auto caused by accidents with an animal.

Animal-vehicle collisions are a danger to motorists, property, and wildlife, but by taking proper safety precautions and updating your NJ Auto Insurance policy you can reduce the risks and financial implications associated with animal-collision.
