Protecting yourself from theft with condo insurance in NJ

Theft is a concern for everyone, but condo dwellers face different challenges to those in more traditional freestanding homes. Most unit buildings have security measures in place which can give residents a sense of reassurance but it is important not to be complacent. Although the replacement of stolen items is generally covered by condo insurance, NJ apartment dwellers like you may find that repeated theft claims on a policy actually drive premiums higher and cost more in the long term. A better idea might be to increase security in and around your condo.

  • Always deadbolt your unit door, even when you are at home or just ducking out to the laundry for five minutes. The same applies to balcony doors. Make sure they have similar deadbolts to the front door and that you use them.
  • Don’t keep items such as bicycles or surfboards on the balcony as they are very vulnerable to theft.
  • Don’t let anyone in to the building unless you know who they are.
  • Report any broken lighting or faulty security systems to the property manager or landlord as soon as possible.

Implementing increased security measures in the form of deadbolts and intruder alarms could not only reduce your risk of becoming a victim of theft, it could potentially lower the cost of your condo insurance in NJ. Insurance agents in our office can provide advice on reducing your insurance costs, so why not call to find out more?
