Safety in the Home

Safety in the home during the summer season is essential to prevent injuries or deaths from occurring to you or your family. While home insurance from Dickstein can protect you financially from liability and property loss, it is also crucial to know how to avoid dangerous situations.

Safety in the Home and the Hazards Around Your Property

But what around the home can hurt you? It would surprise you. There are many dangers you must know about and how to prevent tragedy.

Grilling Safety

Many people will do grilling this summer as the weather remains warm. However, you must know how to examine it properly. Keep all flammable materials at least 10 feet away from your grill. Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet from the house and on a level surface. When you do start the grill, never walk away from it or leave it unattended. If you have children or pets, prevent them from going anywhere near the barbeque. After grilling for the night, put out the fire to ensure safety.

Pool Safety

If you have a built-in pool, do everything you can to enforce safety standards. Does your fence meet the required height for your community? If you have kids, it is important to teach them how to swim and never leave them unattended.  Establish the 2 person rule, Never swim alone! Inform them about the correct and incorrect ways to act around the pool. You could also have a diving board and a slide. Inform your kids about the proper way to dive off the board, allowing them enough space to land in the water. Then, inform them that the safest way to slide is forward and put their legs first as they come down the slide.

Yard Safety

Imagine you have a garden. A garden could contain plants and many bugs, some of which could sting. Summer is when ants come out more often due to the heat. Also, Wasps and Hornets can become a problem during the summer when the weather warms up. Termites also pose an issue in the summer and are something every property owner should keep an eye on. What about fire pits?  Make sure they are at least 25 feet from your home, have proper ash screens and make sure they are completely out before retiring for the day.

Foundation Safety and Renovation Projects

Summer is often a time for renovation projects. Thus, it is vital to know the risks that come with any foundation or renovation project. Hire a certified contractor to work on whatever project you need. Then, evaluate whether there are cracks in the foundation or anything that could provide a liability. Do this before inviting guests to ensure everyone has the safest experience possible.

Safety in the Home

All these things can provide dangerous elements in the home. However, if you remain vigilant, you will not have any issues, and you and the entire family will have nothing to worry about.
