What is the NFIP?

The National Flood Insurance Program is a Federal program created by Congress to mitigate future flood losses nationwide by enforcing building and zoning ordinances to provide access to federally backed insurance protection for property and business owners. The NFIP is designed as an alternative to disaster assistance to help meet costs associated with damage to buildings and their contents caused by flooding.  Each community can adopt this program once an agreement between the Federal and State governments is reached, making flood insurance available within the community.
