With allergies on the rise, make sure you are kept safe with our NJ Short Term Disability!

As the fall progresses, many people with allergies are suffering. Although the causes of allergies vary from state to state, according to an article in the Asbury Park Press, the allergy of autumn in New Jersey is ragweed.

After being the rainiest month in state history, the area has more people being affected by allergies than previously. Luckily, over-the-counter medications like Claritin and Allegra help prevent watery eyes and other symptoms.

However, unlike children, who sometimes outgrow allergies, an onset of allergies as an adult likely means you will have the sniffles for good. More than 40 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, which last from April to October, or until the first frost comes.

“You have a peak any time of the year,” says Dr. Robert Coifman, allergist at the Millville practice Allergy & Asthma in South Jersey. “We have pollen with spring, grass in the summer, and high counts of ragweed and mold this time of year.”

The symptoms of allergies can affect a person’s ability to function, as a stuffy nose can impede sleep, says Dr. Corinna Bowser of South Jersey Allergy and Asthma Associates. “And they’re tired and they take more antihistamines and they feel foggy all day and they can’t (function),” Bowser says.

Another treatment method is through desensitization, the process by which the allergen is boiled into a solution and administered to the patient in varying concentrations at frequent intervals.

At Dickstein Associates Agency, we hope that the community prepares and takes the proper precautions for the autumn allergy season.
