According to The Star-Ledger, Jim Relyea says having a heart attack on his 40th birthday was “the best thing that ever happened to me.” Fifteen months after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery, the Rockaway Township man says he feels “better than I ever felt.”

On that fateful day, Relyea could tell something was wrong before the heart attack while he was photographing sites around Washington, D.C. Walking up the steep hill at Arlington National Cemetery, he began sweating profusely.

Relyea feared he was going to die. “The guilt was absolutely crushing,” he said. “I had an overwhelming feeling that I hadn’t done enough.” So when he woke up after the surgery, he decided, “I’ve got to fix this. I don’t have a lot of money, but I can give my time.” After launching an exercise regimen that had him walking seven miles a day, Relyea participated in his first charitable event just 13 weeks after the heart attack.

“I have a second chance, but I don’t know how much longer I’m going to live,” Relyea explained. “I want my kids to be proud.” In Relyea’s most notable effort, he organized a group of 21 employees at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, family members, and friends for the Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights in February. Relyea and his fellow colleagues jumped in the 37-degree ocean and raised $11,600 for Special Olympics New Jersey.

Two longtime colleagues and friends at Kessler, who participated in the Polar Bear Plunge, have noticed how Relyea has changed. “The important things matter to him more and the less important things matter less,” said Terry Carolan of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., physical therapist manager at Kessler and Relyea’s longtime friend. Although it didn’t seem like a positive when it happened, Rosenberg agreed the heart attack turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to his friend.
